Full-fibre broadband works by using fibre-optic cables, made from thin strands of glass, to transmit data as light signals, rather than electrical signals like traditional broadband.
Light signals experience less signal loss than traditional copper wires, meaning more data can be transmitted at high speeds – literally at the speed of light! As a result, full-fibre offers a faster and more reliable connection.
Once the light signal reaches your home, it’s converted into an electrical signal by a device called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This terminal connects to your broadband router, which uses the electrical signal to distribute your internet service to your devices.
Full-fibre broadband offers powerful benefits that greatly outweigh traditional broadband connections:
If you haven’t already, make the switch to full-fibre! You won’t regret it.
Full-fibre broadband means that everyone in the house can experience seamless wi-fi without dead zones, your network dropping or slow connections when too many devices are connected.
Family man, Nick, needed a broadband connection that could handle working from home whilst ensuring the kids could connect their devices. Being online at the same time is important for this busy family home.
Some broadband services struggle to handle smaller households, for Jessica and her husband this was the case! They were experiencing bad lag (a delay between your action and your broadband network’s response), buffering and slow speeds when gaming and streaming at the same time but that all changed when they switched to full-fibre with toob.
Matthew and Jane were promised a download speed of 120 Mbps but rarely received 40 Mbps with their old connection. With full-fibre broadband, they finally get to enjoy their home more with flexible options, including having a TV in a different room to the router!
At toob, we believe that the little things make a big difference – that’s why we deliver only fast, reliable and affordable full-fibre broadband.
Broadband providers can choose the speeds they offer using full-fibre technology. You might see providers offering packages any where from 100 Mbps all the way up to 1 Gbps (also known as gigabit broadband).
At toob, we offer 150 Mbps and 900 Mbps services at affordable prices to keep the experience of purchasing full-fibre broadband simple. Explore our home broadband speeds.
We also have a social tariff, named toob essentials, for those on certain government benefits.
Full-fibre is perfect for gaming as it has a lower latency than traditional broadband, this faster response time between the game server and your console means smoother gameplay ensuring you can be competitive against other players in fast-paced games.
Thanks to the benefits of fibre-optic cables being more durable and less susceptible to interference, gaming with full-fibre is more reliable with fewer disconnections and lag, for a consistent performance.
There’s no need to wait for large downloads of games or feel frustrated if a live streamed event cuts out, with faster download and upload speeds.
Plus, because full-fibre can transfer more data quicker, it means you can keep up to date with new gaming technology like virtual reality (VR) and enjoy higher resolution experiences, so you don’t miss a thing!
Can your traditional broadband do that?
Full-fibre isn’t currently available everywhere in the UK, with only 74% of households able to receive full-fibre connectivity. However, in 2021 the UK government announced Project Gigabit – a nationwide programme with emphasis on closing the digital divide between urban and rural communities. The ambition of project gigabit is to ‘fibre-up’ 99% of the UK by 2032.
At toob, our mission is for every home across the UK to have access to affordable, reliable and ultrafast broadband. We’re expanding our own network and recently helped Southampton top the list for best city for remote workers in the UK. We’ve also partnered with CityFibre to expand our reach so more locations can make the most of our full-fibre broadband.
Full-fibre broadband is typically available in most urban areas, with some rural areas also benefitting from the technology too.
You can find UK broadband coverage for FTTP on the thinkbroadband map.
Most broadband providers will include a postcode checker on their website to check if you can connect to their network.
Our postcode checker will tell you if you’re in a location that has access to the toob network, or you can opt in to let us know when our full-fibre broadband is available in your area. Whilst we might be available in a nearby area, you’ll need to check if your specific street or home has been connected to our network.
There are a number of internet service providers (ISPs) available in the UK, with several large brands also beginning to offer full-fibre broadband.
toob is a full-fibre broadband provider in the UK and we believe fast, affordable and reliable broadband should be available to all. This is why we supply our customers with 15x faster download and 68x faster upload speeds than the UK average (source: Ofcom 2023).
We’re headquartered in the South of England and deliver full-fibre to over 90,000 customers across the UK. You can find out if toob’s full-fibre broadband is available in your area by viewing our locations.
Prior to your install day, an engineer will visit your property to assess the best path for the full-fibre cable to reach from the street into your home.
For some properties, the cable will be fed underground, whilst most will be routed via a nearby telegraph pole. The process can be slightly different for some apartments or buildings with multiple properties, but our engineers are experts in installing toob in all types of homes.
Once our engineer has finished connecting the fibre box and router, our last step is to activate the service and show you just how fast your new toob full-fibre speeds are!
When purchasing broadband, your provider will give you the option to choose an installation date so you can pick this to suite your schedule. On the day, you installation will typically take a couple of hours by an engineer.
Installing toob full-fibre broadband usually takes between 1 and 2 hours. You can find out more about how toob install our full-fibre service from the green cabinet to your home here:
Most modern devices will work with full-fibre broadband, such as: smartphones, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart home devices such as Ring and Alexa.
Traditional landlines are being phased out with the ‘landline switch-off’ that is due to take place in 2027. With this in mind, many broadband providers are switching to digital landlines, also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This means your phone connects to your router in order to make and receive phone calls.
Yes, you can keep your landline with some providers, however the switch off means your existing landline will be removed over the next few years.
You may also be able to keep your existing phone number when switching to full-fibre, you’ll just need to ask your provider to move it over.
FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) – refers to fibre-optic cables running to the street cabinet
FTTP (Fibre to Premises) or FTTH (Fibre to Home) – refers to fibre-optic cable running directly to the customer’s home
Gigabit Broadband – internet speeds offering speeds of 1 Gbps or more
ONT (Optical Network Terminal) – this is the device that is installed inside your home, connecting the fibre-optic cables that bring broadband to your home and converting the light signal into an electrical signal that the router can use
Router – the device inside your home that distributes the internet connection to your devices
Latency – the time it takes for data to travel from your device to the game server and back
