At toob full-fibre broadband, community is at the heart of everything we do. On Friday 5th January, members of our team attended Unity 101’s 18th Anniversary Awards and Achievement Event at the Novotel hotel in Southampton to celebrate accomplishments within the community over the past year.

Unity 101 is an Asian and Ethnic community radio station in Southampton that has been broadcasting 24 hours a day for the last 18 years. The station is volunteer-led, with a heavy community focus and a mission to bring people from all different backgrounds together.

toob has been working closely with Unity 101 since we began our roll out in Southampton back in 2019. Through this partnership, we have been able to take a step further into the community as we believe access to fast, reliable and affordable broadband is vital in our ever-increasingly digital world.

Alongside the toob team, over 300 guests attended the ceremony and celebrated the achievements of those who won awards for their hard work in the local community.  Also in attendance were many special guests, including the High Sheriff of Hampshire, Amelia Riviere, the Lord Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Valerie Laurent, and the Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Nick Couldrey.

Michael Ockwell, from Mayflower Theatre and MAST Studios, presented certificates to radio volunteers, while Hampshire Constabulary’s Deputy Chief Constable, Sam de Reya, celebrated various others at the 18th anniversary celebration.

Among the deserving winners was Unity 101’s very own Ram ‘Kelly’ Kalyan, who received the National 2023 Community Media Champion award.

Mr Kalyan said: “Unity 101 has always understood the power that comes from standing together, embracing diversity and supporting one another. Our partnership with toob was a shining example of our commitment to unity and community, as we joined forces to bring people closer through technology and communication.

“The event was an occasion not just to honour the accomplishments of individuals and organisations, but to reflect. We also celebrated our collective efforts, shared ambitions, and unwavering support for one another.

“As we look ahead to the future, we pledge to continue building bridges, fostering understanding, and championing the cause of unity in our community. For it was in unity that we found our greatest strength and our brightest hope.”

As well as a range of awards, the occasion featured entertainment from Mayflower Youth Theatre, Om Shanti Om singers and several local dancers who performed throughout the night. The glamorous bash concluded with Southampton Dance Group performing a classical Bollywood dance to wow the crowds.
